Fasehun: Why I Backed Al-Mustapha

The leader of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Dr. Federick Fasehun, Monday explained why he was in support of the Appeal Court judgment, which discharged and acquitted the former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha.

Fasheun said the judgment given by a competent court in the land, was a testimony that Al-Mustapha had no hand in the killing of the late Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, wife of the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief MKO Abiola.

Fasehun, who made the assertion Monday, at the Yoruba Community Association (YCA) Hall, in Kano where he was hosted by the Yoruba community and OPC in the state, said all patriotic Yorubas should be grateful to God that throughout the period Al-Mustapha was in Kirikiri Maximum Prison, nothing harmful occurred to him nor did he die in prison.

He disclosed that his action was to demonstrate to the world that Yorubas were not a detribalised people, who would always stand by justice and equal right at all times.

According to him, there was no reasonable evidence to nail the former CSO as the killer of Kudirat, stressing: “We all must fear God, that is why I decided to join people to support his freedom.

“Therefore, I resolved to spearhead bringing Al-Mustapha to the ancient city of Kano, to let them know that though we lost our son and daughter during the June 12, 1993 presidential election, but we still believe in the fact that since the court has exonerated him, we the Yorubas have nothing against him.”

He, therefore, urged the Yorubas to always fight for their right, adding that: “The pathetic and sadden aspect of Major Al-Mustapha’s trauma during his trial was that all those alleged witnesses brought to court later came back and withdraw the statement earlier made that he sent them to killed Kudirat.”

The funny aspect was that the very Judge, who delivered the judgment that Al-Mustapha should be hanged, alleged “travelled to overseas because she was called to sign the court verdict, which the Appeal Court later discovered lacked transparency.”

Meanwhile, the Deputy President of the Yoruba Association in Kano, Chief Jerry Agunbiade, commended Fasehun for his noble role in following Al-Mustapha to Kano.
