The Lagos State House of Assembly has condemned the alleged move by the Federal Government to declare a State of emergence in three Northern States of Nigeria.
During a phone conversation with newsmen on Tuesday, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy, Security and Publicity, Hon. Segun Olulade berated the alleged plan of the Jonathan administration to put Nasarawa, Borno and Yobe States under emergency rule, adding that the amnesty programme that is already set in motion by the Federal Government would help in bringing a considerable, if not lasting solution, to the killings in the Northern part of the country just like it did in the Niger-Delta region of the country.
According to the lawmaker, ‘’emergency rule is a backward approach to critical situations in a democratic society, to the extent that the rule of law is subverted, people are psychologically traumatized, real governance is suspended, development is jettisoned and the essence of the emergency rule itself is defeated’’
Hon. Olulade stressed that various intelligence reports and warnings made by the CIA and other security agencies in the past speaks volume of the fragility of the Nigerian state and the intent of some mischievous elements and enemies of Nigeria to destabilize the country and push it towards the shores of disintegration.
He warned the Federal Government to beware of bad advisers and fifth columnists that are only waiting to seize upon a crisis situation to deepen the nation’s woes and tear the country apart.
While commiserating with Governors and people of Nasarawa, Borno, Benue and Yobe and other affected states, Olulade enjoined the widows of the slain policemen to accept the demise of their husbands in good faith, saying their husbands are gallant and courageous heroes who died in the course of their service to their fatherland and that their pains and labour will not be in vain.
