The flying visit of Her Excellency, First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs
Patience, to Nigerian Law School Bwari yesterday kicked off with a
high razzmatazz of jubilation among the students. One might even be
forced to conclude that the law students lost their standard of
professional morale and sober custom, as they, in the spirit of bus
conductors and roadside boys, threw up and out chanting different kind
of ‘gbosa gbosa gbosa’ in a very disorganised fashion. I mean, one
could be tempted to join in the sycophantic praise-singing.
When I inquired why she came to the school, I learnt she was there to
visit the two nieces and the DG (on this latter i have no
information). Notwithstanding the performances, rolling and jumping,
she managed to take a leeway into the Block C girls hostel where she
had a little jawjaw with the SRC Chairman.
As the celebration continued, one would have thought this would lead
to a good ending. But the announcement of a donation to the students
overturned the whole festival. The Students Representative Council
Chairman who collected the donation reported there that the First Lady
dropped 500 thousand Naira. This report triggered an uproar in
disbelief which led into chaos and immediate protest. Unfortunately
for the Chairman, the disgruntled elements in the mix of well meaning
students searched his car and recovered 1 million Naira. This led to
another demonstrative protest song ‘ole ole ole ole’ for some hours
before the security men could bring the situation under their control.
The School authority confiscated the money pending the peaceful
determination of the matter. However, as for the students, they have
sworn to terminate the term of the chairman on the ground of betrayal
of public trust, lack of integrity and abuse of office. Who could
think a mere donation of 1 million Naira could lead to these
overwhelming serious allegations? All these happened in the evening of
yesterday.
Today has capped it up. The morning class held today was an unusual
market place as the students insisted that the chairman must be
impeached. Another camp even went further to move for dissolution of
the entire SRC. This is a critical pisma dismal. After all the
persuasion and melodramatic intrigue, the Chairman stepped aside so
that a thorough investigation could be launched into the matter.
Petition form however crisscrossed seats to seats as students appended
their signatures without blinking eyes. What a rigor. Whether Mr
Chairman Frank Utoo, an indigene of Benue State who recently got
married, to be specific, last two weeks ago, will have his buttocks
deposed from this honorable position, whether his name will be entered
in the blackbook of impeached Nigerian Law School Chairman, and
whether his image will be eventually besmirched on the altar of
confirmed dishonesty, is yet to be resolved. The result of this
investigation will determine all.
Nigerian Youth! Where are thou? As we suffer now because of
corruption, we are supposed to work to overcome this ill and not to
perpetuate it.
