The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division Nigerian Army (NA), Major General Obinna Onubogu, was at Randa in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, on 30 May 2024, to receive President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, who was in the state to commission the ADEBAYO ALAO – AKALA EXPRESSWAY, funded by the state government, under the leadership of Engineer Seyi Makinde, the Executive Governor of Oyo State.
In his remarks, the President, who was represented by the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, expressed delight to Governor Makinde and the good people of Oyo State for the warm reception and untold hospitality given to him on his visit. He said that Oyo State is his second home; and holds a special place in his heart, stressing its relevance to him during his university education at the Premier University of Ibadan.
He noted that the newly constructed road would serve as a good platform to boost economic activities in the state, as well as help in improving the People’s standard of living. “We can sustain our democracy and keep the promises we made to the people we are serving. The farmers, business owners and other citizens from all works of life, could utilize the road to their benefits”, he said.
The President, further commended the Governor for the laudable project, while encouraging him to sustain the initiative. “Governor Seyi Makinde, my brother and good friend, you have demonstrated quality leadership in your governance of Oyo State; and posterity will be kind to you.”
The Governor, while delivering his speech, thanked the Vice President, Senator Kashim, for making out time to represent the President at the commissioning of the landmark road project; stressing that the objective of the road was to impact positively on the lives of the people of Ogbomoso, Iseyin and all other neighboring communities within and around Oyo State.
“We are still doing more, because we have to link Ibarapa to Ibadan, and also continue to Eruwa and Ijaye before the year runs out. Our focus has always been to spread development everywhere in Oyo State”, he added. In his concluding message, the Governor, invited Local and International Investors to partner with Oyo State Government in achieving their dreams and contributing to making the state greater.
The event, also witnessed a special vote of thanks to the Governor, which was aptly delivered by the former military Governor of Ogun and Oyo States, Major General Oladayo Popoola (Rtd). He appreciated Governor Makinde, for making Oyo a modern state. In his words, he said; “I was in Oyo 40 years ago. I know what it was, and also know that it cannot be compared with what it is now, all for the sake of our Governor’s selfless service to all.” He also thanked him for naming the road after the late Governor, Adebayo Alao – Akala.
Highpoints of the event were, Project Briefs from the Managing Directors, KOPEK and CRANEBURG Construction Companies Limited, Mr Issam Faghail and Mr Gilbert Sassine respectively and commissioning of the project by the representative of the President. There were also goodwill messages from dignitaries as well as dance displays by Ogbomoso Traditional Dance Troop.
