“In Memory of a Maverick: Mimiko Reflects on the Life and Legacy of Dr. Chuwuemeka Ezefie”

Dr Olusegun Mimiko, the immediate past governor of Ondo state, has called the death of Dr Chuwuemeka Ezefie, one-time governor of Anambra State, as the closing of another page in the history of Nigeria.

In a statement made available by John Paul Akinduro, his Special Assistant on Media and Digital Communications, Mimiko said the story of Ezefie from his early days through to his last days is that of a man who dared to attain his set goals no matter how daunting the challenges.

“Dr Ezefie was a man who struggled on his own terms and conditions and was never fundamentally swayed by the crowd or by negative circumstances.

“My association with him revealed to a large extent his analytical prowess, clear headedness and belief in the Nigerian state. He was also unapologetic about his preference for a southern president of Igbo extraction, a reality which ranged him against hitherto friends and enemies alike.

“The story of Ezeife’s journey to a Doctoral Degree after having earlier been withdrawn from school without a secondary school certificate ought to be an inspiration to many in this generation who are at the precipice of despair and hopelessness.” Mimiko in the statement said.

The former governor further described Dr Ezeife as a man of conviction whose stance on national issues shaped his political career.

According to him, “He was vocal, eloquent and opinionated. And whichever side of the debate you found him, he was not a man who goes without leaving his imprints in terms of clear and unambiguous positioning and propositions, consistency and erudition,”

Mimiko prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed political leader and that the Lord grant his family the fortitude to bear the loss.
