The Rivers State Government says it decided to demolish the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex because it had structural defects caused by a recent fire that engulfed it.
The State Government had on Wednesday morning, rolled out 10 bulldozers which began the demolition of the complex.
A statement by the State Commissioner for Information, Mr Joseph Johnson, released on Wednesday morning, said Governor Sim Fubara took the decision on the demolition of the complex based on advice given to him by professionals
.He said the structural integrity of the facility had been compromised as dynamites were used to attack it.
“After the assessment of the integrity of the complex, the experts warned the government that continuing to use the building in its present state would be disastrous”, the statement said.
The statement further said, “In the interim, the Rivers State Government has provided an alternative venue for the House of Assembly to conduct their affairs pending the rebuilding of the complex”.
