A journalist who works for Arise TV, Mary Chinda, has narrated how she escaped death by a whisker alongside journalists from other media houses at the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential rally that took place in Maiduguri on Wednesday.
The convoy of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, reportedly came under attack by suspected thugs, as some party supporters were injured and several vehicles vandalised.
Chinda, who sustained muscular injuries during the attack, said she almost lost her life.
According to her, journalists were attacked despite being with the PDP presidential candidate’s convoy.

She said, “While on the way to the campaign ground, the PDP presidential candidate’s convoy was attacked as we made to leave the palace of the Shehu of Borno. In a bid to escape the aggressive and rowdy crowd, I hurried into a Marcopolo luxury bus that carried the National Woman Leader and other party officials. As we moved, stones and what sounded like dane guns were pelted at our bus. I lost balance and tripped over as the driver swerved the car to get us to safety.
“I went blank and lost consciousness for a split second, until I was lifted by Mr. Osaro and Mr. Mohammed of the presidential campaign council who provided first aid from the medical team.”
Meanwhile, one person has reportedly died following the attack.
The governorship candidate of the PDP in Borno State, Mohammed Jajari, who confirmed the incident during an interview on Channels TV, said over 100 injuries were recorded in the aftermath of the attack.
