THE Senate is set to take a landmark decision to remove Senator Robert Boroffice from the red chamber after declaring his seat vacant.
Boroffice was adjudged by both the Senate and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to have run foul of the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as it affects defection from political parties and would soon be sent packing from the chamber.
Sources in the Senate confirmed that the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions headed by Senator Ayo Akinyelure had, upon the conclusion of its hearing on the matter, concluded that the Senate should declare Boroffice’s seat vacant.
Senator Boroffice was elected into the Senate in 2011 on the ticket of the Labour Party (LP). He represents Ondo North Senatorial District.
He, however, sparked crisis when he announced his defection to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) barely a year into his tenure.
The Senate committee had compiled a report which will be debated by the lawmakers any moment from now. The report was said to have been unanimously endorsed by members of the committee.
Sources in the committee said that the Senators interacted with Boroffice and he could not defend himself on the allegations that he ran foul of Section 68(1)g) of the 1999 Constitution.
The Office of the President of the Senate, has, however, distanced the Senate President, David Mark, from the fate that is set to befall the Ondo lawmaker.
In a statement on Thursday, Media Adviser to the Senate President, Kola Ologbondiyan, said that the Ondo Senator was the architect of his own fate.
The statement read : “President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, yesterday (Thursday) distanced himself from the alleged plot to remove Senator Robert Boroffice from the Senate and described the allegation of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) as unfounded and mischievous.
“According to Senator Mark, Senator Boroffice, who represents Ondo North in the Senate, is the architect of whatever fate befell him in the on-going imbroglio over whether he (Boroffice) could retain his seat in the Senate after decamping from Labour Party (LP), on which platform he was elected, to join the ACN or not.”
ACN spokesperson, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, had in a signed statement recently accused the Senator Mark-led Senate of using “arm-twisting” tactics to declare Boroffice’s seat vacant.
