When torch-light carrying singer/rapper Zaaki Azzay’s marital issues became public knowledge, it came to many as a surprise especially after eight years of marriage and three children– not because we knew what was going on in his marriage but because of the allegations of wife battery and that trailed his wife, Hadiza’s abscondment from her matrimonial home.
Although the singer has denied all the allegations levelled against him, the matter is already in the court of public opinion. Last week, September 21 to be precise, which was the international ‘Peace Day’, Hadiza Azzay narrated her experience to the Wellbeing Foundation Africa – founded to create awareness about the human and emotional cost of domestic violence.
“He slapped me on the face so (and said) ‘get up you must abort this pregnancy today. Now that I am married to you, you want to hook me with pregnancy because I am a celebrity.’ Then there was a wardrobe in our room so I put my tummy in there and then he continued beating me. He had some folic acid in his hand and said I should swallow it and abort the pregnancy. When he gave me I said he should allow me take water, thank God the door was open so I ran away.”
I don’t support domestic violence or any form of physical abuse targetted at women and children especially, but I sincerely hope that these allegations are unfounded because if they are not, Zaaki Azzay would be looking at spending time behind bars after the legal fireworks must have died down.
