My name is Olawale Olaleye. I’m a reporter with THISDAY, Nigeria’s foremost national daily, and dignified with the office of the deputy editor of the Sunday title of the newspaper group.
I just want to talk to you about my day and some of the issues that have been agitating my mind lately. I think about these things almost everytime and none seems to make sense to me.
I had a rather unusual chat with a worthy egbon, a medical doctor, this morning. It was at the break of the news of the passing of one of your daughters, Mrs Ibidun Igbodalo. But he was stupefied by my postulations, which of course was borne out of sheer confusion or let me say, state of shock.
He was devastated by the news of Ibidun’s passing and had sought consolation with me. Sadly, he chose the wrong candidate. Bemused myself, I started with such prognosis that would further confound both of us.
Often, in my solitary moments, I’d asked to know what was on your mind, God, when you created the earth? Take away the allure of its beauty and the pleasure that often stokes the desperation for wealth accumulation, this world you created is actually a vanity.
Sculpted by the transience of its aesthetics and the desperate wickedness of some of your creatures, not sure you had a clear idea what your creation has ultimately become before breathing life into everything.
The wicked ones thrive and exercise dominion over the best of all that life offers. The seemingly pious ones suffer persecution. The faithful persevere in vain and the godly ones have continued to wait endlessly with delayed answers to their prayers.
All the Shakespearean descriptions of life are succint. They capture its very essence: the vanity and the supporting inanity. Truly, it’s nothing short of a poor player, who struts and frets his hours on a stage and is suddenly found no more. What then is life if not vanity?
What with all the struggles? Why do we kill each other on account of silly and tawdry pretext? What’s the envy about? Why the hate for no just cause? What are we stealing for – to buy a house in the hereafter?
Why are racism, xenophobia, tribalism and nepotism the only motivations that define the ugly fault lines of many social units and for what purposes?
Hello God, are you there? Why are we really here? To serve what purpose? Are you enjoying the entertainment offered by the many contradictions and the thriving evil around the world? Are you for real omniscient and omnipresent? Are you truly God and yet can’t stop these things?
Honestly, the only sense I’ve been able to make of your creation called the earth is that, “it’s all vanity”. With the swirling depression, oppression, suppression and rejection everywhere, there’s actually nothing beautiful about this life. It’s nothing but a walking shadow.
I hope you’re still on the phone? Hello God, oh, the network again. I’ll talk to you sometime soon. Goodnight, God!
