World Cancer Day is a global observance that helps raise people’s awareness of
cancer and how to prevent, detect, or treat it. This event is held on February 4
each year.
This year’s theme, “I can, we can” acknowledges that everyone has the capacity
to address the cancer burden. We can work together to reduce cancer risk
factors.
It is in recognition of this that the first lady of kwara state Dr (Mrs) Olufolake
Abdulrazaq and the Ajike people’s support center is constantly given to the
promotion of sound healthy living, hence on this occasion of the commemoration
of world cancer day enjoins people to endeavour to present themselves for
periodic health checks and screening as early detection is key.
Cancer is said to be the second leading cause of death globally, and according to
the World Health Organization (WHO) it is responsible for an estimated 9.6
million deaths in 2018 alone with Nigeria bearing 41,000 of this figure.
In view of this alarming statistics, governments should translate their
commitments to reducing the cancer burden into national action by
implementing resource-appropriate strategies on prevention, early detection, and
treatment.
Though cancer is not communicable but it is advisable to abstain from habits that
can heighten ones risk of having it and indulge in healthy eating habits, engage in
physical activities and avoid smoking as it is the most preventable cause of cancer
in the world.
The office of the first lady and Ajike people’s support center will continue to
create awareness, lead advocacies and provide information and education on
cancer especially those that affect women.
