We leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South West, here gathered, deliberated on serious issues that concern our region, nation and Party, therefore arrived at the following conclusions;
- That we take serious view of the judgment of the Court of Appeal, Ibadan Division on the matter of Adebayo Adelabu of APC, challenging the victory of His Excellency, Engineer Seyi Makinde and PDP in the last gubernatorial election in Oyo State.
- That this judgement has generated so many opinions across the nation and has been variously described as an untoward development in the life of our judiciary. Afenifere described it as a “judicial anarchy” which created a confusion that still persists.
- That we in the PDP still accord due respect to the judiciary and continues to respect its decisions, though currently worried too by the judgement of the said Court of Appeal as it was not directional and succinct in respect of its intended conclusions, thereby creating unnecessary rooms for interest groups to give interpretations that suit them.
- That in view of our respect for the judiciary, we support the appeal of Engineer Seyi Makinde and the PDP in Oyo State to the Supreme Court, with a view to set aside the contentious aspects of the judgement in the interest of justice and fair play.
- That we wish to re-emphasize and place firmly in public view that the PDP roundly defeated the APC in Oyo State during the last Governorship election, winning in twenty-eight local government areas while APC won in only five ! The only judgement that can remain consistent with the electoral desires of the people of that State is that, which confirms the victory of the PDP in that election. Adelabu and APC’s direct evidence at the State Election Petition Tribunal, even if accedes to, cannot harm or injure the outcome of the election.
- That we take further view of the last election in Kogi and Bayelsa States. We condemn the growing use of the security agencies in untoward manners to compromise election results in favour of the APC. In Kogi, it is established that the Police aided the APC and its candidate massively in rigging the elections, the deployment of a Police helicopter to aerially bombard voters on election day attracts serious condemnation. We also condemn in the most unequivocal manner, the gruesome murder of Mrs Salome Acheju Abuh in unwarranted after election violence and demand that full wrath of the law must be visited on the culprits forthwith, only such firm action will prevent that State from becoming a labyrinth of violence in our nation.
- That in view of (5) above, we demand an urgent revisit of the electoral bill by the National Assembly, particularly the bill passed by the 8th Assembly and curiously vetoed by the President. This bill represents an immediate panacea to the crisis and debacle elections have since become in our nation. It is a shame that the legacy for the electoral desires of the people the PDP bequeathed to President Buhari has been destroyed, to the extent that Nigerian elections no longer command respect in the comity of nations nor generate legitimacy at home.
- That we vehemently condemn the proposed death by hanging penalty for hate speech bill and that no discussion at a political gathering should be regarded as hate speech.
