Members of the Majlis Ansarullah (Elders Forum of the world-wide Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at), Nigeria branch, held its 44th Annual National Ijtema (Convention) from Friday 16th through Sunday 18th August, 2019 in Ota, Ogun State with the theme: INNER REFORMATION: KEY TO REAL ETHICAL REVOLUTION.
The Ahmadi Muslim Elders, after much deliberation, reflections, meditations and fervent prayers on the Nigeria project, rose from the three-day Convention with the following resolutions:
- The congregation unanimously agrees that one of the most robust tools for societal reformation is individual inner moral reformation and that this will eventually result in sustained ethical revolution in Nigeria. Therefore, the Federal, State, and Local Governments should ensure that all parents are enjoined to live up to their responsibilities by giving their children exemplary moral training in other to breed high quality citizens that will contribute significantly to the economic, social, educational, and political growth of Nigeria.
- The congregation urges the Government to strongly uphold justice for all citizens. It views justice as one of the harbingers of peaceful co-existence among the people. Justice also fosters the spirit of love, understanding and mutual respect in the citizenry and prevents anarchy and brigandage. An atmosphere of peace also attracts foreign investment. Therefore, the government should create equal opportunities for all and eschew nepotism, tribalism and favouritism in all shades and colours.
- The congregation holds that although corruption is a global menace, Nigeria’s situation seems to be one of the most critical. The profile of Nigerians outside the country is not encouraging. Hence, the government should strengthen existing government agencies such as EFCC, ICPC, CCB, and the judiciary. It is also proposed that there should be mechanisms to watch the watchdogs themselves to curb absolute power and potential conflict of interest.
- As an addendum to 2 above, the Federal Government in particular, the State and Local Governments in general should ensure that every political and public office-holder should be subjected to extreme vetting to monitor their property before, during and after leaving office in order to check their excesses.
- The congregation also observes that kidnapping is gradually becoming an endemic phenomenon in the country. The root cause is partly due to the unbridled desire of youths for overnight wealth. The practitioners are brutal in their approach and wicked in their intention. The consequences of their actions are unprintable.
The elders also believe that youth empowerment is a potent strategy to stopping kidnapping. Adequate public orientation is another. Adequately equipping and training the security forces to combat this menace is another strategy. - It is also strongly advocated that Nigeria should free herself from the curse of oil by investing a large chunk of the national budget on the development of the agricultural sector. Apart from providing abundant food for the country, it can match oil in providing the needed foreign exchange. It will also provide sustainable raw materials for lasting industrial growth in the country.
- The congregation prayed that Allah may guide our leaders at various levels of government to steer the ship of our nation’s development to greater heights and assist them in tackling the problem of insurgency currently disguising in different shapes and sizes in the country.
