Ekiti State Governor, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi has commissioned a new Council of Obas following the dissolution of the previous council headed by Oloye of Oye-Ekiti, Oba Oluwole Ademolaju on 31st of July, 2019.
The new council, chaired by Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti Oba Adebanji Alabi, was commissioned during an in inaugural meeting of the State Government with the Bureau of Chieftaincy Affairs at the Event Hall of the Governor’s Office.
While giving his Inaugural Address, Governor Fayemi said the state government will continue to develop strong ties with the council adding that they play important roles in governance.
“I warmly welcome the newly constituted council of Obas to the development agenda of the state. As custodians of customs, culture and traditions I urge you all to persistently uphold the values of the land by protecting our history, monuments and socio-cultural existence of Ekiti State.
“The traditional institution in the state remains a vital part of our administration in maintaining peace and prosperity of our people. This institution should also ensure the undying unity of the state by advocating peaceful co-existence at the grassroots.
“I hereby inaugurate this new council, and the Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Alabi as the Chairman, Council of Obas in Ekiti State,” he said.
In his acceptance speech, His Royal Majesty Oba Adebanji Alabi said that the Council will continue to play its advisory role in key areas of governance in the state.
“I appreciate the government of Ekiti State headed by Governor Kayode Fayemi for providing an enabling environment for the council to remain relevant in state governance.
“We have a mandate to support the restoration values of the governor. I hereby urge my colleague-Obas and all chiefs of the state to work hand-in-hand with the government as we remain an advisory body to the government in line with established laws in this regard.
“Our past and present experiences will equip us for the task to promote and preserve the peace of the state. As traditional rulers, we are the closest institution to the grassroots and we urge the government to collaborate with the council to eradicate criminal tendencies in our communities,” he said.
The event, chaired by Governor Fayemi, was also attended by the Deputy Governor, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi; Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Funminiyi Afuye; Deputy Speaker, Hon. Hakeem Jamiu; Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Justice Wale Fapohunda; Secretary to the State Government, Biodun Oyebanji; Chief of Staff, Biodun Omoleye, Head of Service Ayodeji Ajayi among.
The historical event was also attended by government officials and traditional rulers such as; House of Assembly members, Bureau of Chieftaincy Affairs, State Executive Council members (Commissioners, Director Generals, General Managers, Permanent Secretaries, Executive Secretaries, Special Advisers, and Senior Special Assistants).
