The Election Tribunal in Ibadan, Oyo State on Friday, July 13, 2019 dismissed a petition filed by Mr. Durodola Muftau Adelani of the Providence People’s Congress (PPC) challenging the validity of the election that brought in Hon. Shina Abiola Peller of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a House of Representatives member representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency.
The petitioner was challenging the election on the ground that his name and logo of his party were excluded on the ballot papers used for the House of Representatives election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on February 23, 2019.
The panel ruled that based on the pieces of evidence presented before the tribunal, the petitioner, Mr. Durodola Muftau Adelani, was not a candidate in the February 23, 2019 House of Representatives election; that he was not validly nominated by his party; that he failed to properly submit his nomination form to INEC; and that he doesn’t have a legal right to challenge the validity of the election on the exclusion of his name and party’s logo from the ballot papers.
Following this, the tribunal therefore dismissed the petition and ordered the petitioner to pay a fine of twenty thousand naira (N20, 000) each to the three respondents joined in the suit. The respondents are Hon. Shina Abiola Peller, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
