Lagos building collapse: Buhari sympathises with victims families

President Muhammadu Buhari says he is extremely saddened by the collapse of a building housing a school in Itafaaji area of Lagos, which left fatalities, particularly, small children.

President Buhari made his feeling known in a press statement by Mr Femi Adesina, the presidential spokesman, in Abuja on Wednesday.
The President sympathised with the parents and relations of the deceased, wishing them God’s comfort.
He also wished the injured speedy and complete recovery.
President Buhari commiserated with the government and good people of Lagos State, and pledged assistance of the Federal Government as may be required by the state.

“It touches one to lose precious lives in any kind of mishap, particularly, ithose so young and tender.
“May God grant everyone affected by this sad incident fortitude and succour,’’ he added.
The president charged the Lagos State Government to do “all that is needful, so that such tragic developments do not recur in future’’.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government says 20 victims of the collapsed school building located at Itafaji in Lagos Island, are receiving treatment in some hospitals in Lagos.
Dr Titilayo Goncalves, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health (MOH), made the disclosure at a news conference at the hospital on Wednesday.
Goncalves said that some of the victims had been transferred to other hospitals for further treatment.
She said that the hospital had earlier created a centre where all patients were taken to and given emergency care.
According to her, once the patients had been stabilised, they were moved to tertiary hospitals including the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, and Gbagada General Hospital.
“So far, we have received about 20 casualties; five have been transferred to LASUTH; three of them to Gbagada General Hospital and some to Onikan General Hospital.
“Some people are still being brought out from the rubbles, “ she said.
The permanent secretary assured parents and guardians of the victims that members of the medical team were on top of the situation.
“People should keep calm and be sure that the very best of service is being provided for all the victims brought out alive, “ she said.
