Don't miss:

A political Christmas blues,Southwest divided by Olu Aluko

I don’t know about you, but from the aggregate of comments heard all year coming from the southwestern part of Nigeria, and people of the southwest extraction known as Yoruba I must say I have not experienced such peacetime political division !

This division is almost equally divided with serious emotions running on both sides of the divide particularly among the middle and upper class!
With the southeast and South south the sentiments of support falls with those opposed to the govt! With the north there is support more from the people on ground zero for the Buhari administration even though the numerical figure may be difficult to determine!
Maybe because the elections are not for away ,this Christmas , it has been an unusually political sensitive one as the political comments keep coming in fast, furious and highly emotional!
So back to the comments coming from the southwest, it’s acrimonious, divisive , controversial and above all saddening! Saddening because we no longer have a collective sense of purpose it’s all about individuals justing for position and now the people of the southwest can see through this!
This was an area that the last elections When the true leaders with influence on ground led by Ashiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu decided to abandon former president Jonathan and roll with the then Challenger current president Buhari tipping the scale in it’s favour!
So now why this almost equally sharp division?
The southwest area of Nigeria is perhaps the most advance in education ! With this advancement comes a more critical mind!
Aspirations and expectation become high as individuals weigh their personal condition against the current times!
Now the suffering has become a “which one came first situation is it the chicken or the egg?
Is it 16 years of PDP rule or misrule that brought us to this situation , or is it the mishandling of governance by the current administration that has resulted in the hardship on ground!
For me it’s an element of both ! Steeped in our collective attitude especially at leadership level as the the leadership class is United in corruption , pursuit of excessive personal wealth to the execlusion of greater society adopting a philosophy of “everyone for him self God for us all!
All elections leading up to this Christmas has been keenly fought with a controversial ending This has shown evidence of serious division right down to the voting masses and has seen the first runoff at gubernatorial level!
An educated mind cannot be easily hoodwinked and will not just support a candidate or party for sentimental reasons!
It will always sit down and ask the question is my situation better today than yesterday!? And even if it is worse, is it a worthwhile sacrifice for a better tommorow? ! So if tommorow comes is it likely to be a better tommorow?
The jury is still out on this ‘good or bad ” tommorow!
As of now I will say the southwest Buhari supporters have a slight edge but that edge will definitely not be able to tip the scale the way it was in the last general elections !
For me the north and the east will determine the coming elections ! That if the elections are not rigged whithin the southwest the two main parties will cancel themselves out vote wise!
To tip the scale the way it did for Buhari the southwest will have to be highly militarised and the elections massively rigged!
The last Osun gubernatorial elections have shown us how divided the southwest is!
Let’s see which direction this political tree will fall!
We wait we see !
Merry Xmas all!
Aficonene !
