Atiku Abubakar GCON is no doubt ordained for leadership from the cradle. He started business as a transporter as a customs officer in 1971 with four vehicles on hire purchase bases. It is however on record that he has never been out of business in five decades and still counting. Such feat can only be attributed to his hunger for success, competence, goodwill, ability to contain economic challenges despite other numerous obligations and commitments.
Besides the transport business, Atiku ventured into real estate in 1974 when he applied for and got a facility of #31,000 (thirty one thousand naira) with which he built his first house in Yola, Adamawa state. He used proceeds of the rent to purchase another plot and built a second house. He continued this way, building a sizeable portfolio of property in Yola.
The business minded Atiku established a maize and cotton farm in 1981 for which he acquired 2,500 hectares of land near Yola. This investment in agriculture was followed by his advent into trading, where he embarked on buying and selling of truckloads of rice, flour and sugar. Dogged and unstoppable as he is, Atiku kept expanding his business empire as he moved on to set up container service known as NICOTES which was later rebranded as INTELS, a logistics company operating within the ports. Did he stop at that? The answer is a big NO! Winners are not quitters. Donald Trump never stopped building businesses even when he went bankrupt, like Atiku’s agric project failed in the early 80s, rather Trump took to networking, bounced back, continued building businesses and relationships till he became the POTUS of the united states. I know that Atiku’s case cannot be any different because he has been consistently on the right track. AAA went ahead to establish a beverage manufacturing plant and animal feed factory in Yola. The animal feed factory especially is a very important establishment; its functionality, expansion and application in relevant areas can arrest serious constraints to agricultural productivity. It is critical to ending the incessant clashes between farmers and Fulani herdsmen if systematically applied by the ministry of agriculture or other relevant organ of government. Only Atiku had this vision, and I believe he can implement it better for a start since the incumbent has shown little or no concern in that regards. Must our people continue to die for a problem whose solution has been provided by Atiku? That’s another capital NO!
Most outstanding amongst Atiku’s chains of investment is the one on human capital development, which kind of boosted Nigeria’s education sector. American University of Nigeria (AUN) is the first American-style university to be established in sub Saharan Africa; thanks to Atiku Abubakar, the man who seems to have in view things that only the likes of late Nostradamus can envisage. This prestigious citadel of learning was founded in Yola in 2005. According to the Wazirin Adamawa, his decision to make available in Nigeria an American training faculty – emphasizing critical thinking, small classes, student participation and problem solving was informed by his benefits from the U.S system of instruction as a young man.
As a renowned philanthropist, Atiku Abubakar donated $750,000 to the National Peace Corps Association in the united states to fund a new initiative featuring global leaders who will discuss Peace Corps impact. It was the largest ever individual donation in the Association’s history.
In his speeches and commentary, Atiku Abubakar is a vocal advocate of the importance of Nigeria’s educational system. In August 2013 he sponsored a students’ essay contest to generate solutions to Nigeria’s most pressing institutional educational challenges. Entrants were asked to write between 2,000 and 5,000 words on the topic ‘More Learning to More People: How can Nigeria be more innovative in bridging its literacy and skills gap?.
A long list was announced on 21 October 2013, and the winners a week later. The joint first prize went to Kenechukwu Nneka Lily Nwagbo and Emeka Chigozie Ezekwesiri. Can such level of benevolence, passion and empowerment initiative be traced to the incumbent President despite having occupied many juicy public office positions in the past and present? Your guess is as good as mine.
Upon the release of the dismal results of the May –June 2014 West African Examinations Council (WAEC) results, Abubakar said in a statement: ″Our country’s educational institutions are clearly not providing quality learning. Our teachers need to be taught. This situation is a new development of the past 10 years or so. The steady decline of education in Nigeria is a reflection of our country’s relegation of education to the background of national essentialities. That is where the change must begin. Teachers are as important as senators and doctors. Indeed, teachers determine the quality of senators and doctors. And so, the entire country stands to suffer the effects of this neglect in future. Nigeria must once again make education a priority. We must return to the basics.”
In a bid to alleviate the educational decadence in Northeastern Nigeria, Abubakar issued scholarship to 15 escapees of the Chibok school girls kidnapping.
The above represents a standard framework, structure and building of potential leaders for which Atiku Abubakar GCON is an outstanding specie.
