Following his predilection for excessive drinking, the Minority Leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria in the Senate and former Governor of Benue State, Senator George Akume, has become a body of embarrassment for his colleagues, Naijahottestgist has learnt.
Akume, who is first an absentee senator, is said to always drink himself to stupor at every sitting he attends, such that his demeanor on the floor of the Senate has become an awkward one and an embarrassment for the upper chamber of the National Assembly. We gathered that not only does he smell of intense alcohol whenever he is in the chamber, he also sleeps off and constitutes overt nuisance to the Senate. The situation is intense such that individual senators, except for his colleagues in the ACN, have begun to worry.
The turn of development was said to have peaked when Akume, during the valedictory session held a few days ago for the slain lawmaker, Senator Gyang Dantong, from Plateau State, did not only smell of deep alcohol, but also could not comport himself to the extent that he is now an object of mockery amongst his colleagues. This we learnt, may have informed the reason why other senators under Akume were not recognized to speak and subsequently denied a right of speech at an occasion as crucial as a valedictory session for a departed colleague.
The development, it was further learnt, has backfired for his party in the sense that the leadership of the Senate has refused to let Akume second motions henceforth or contribute to issues in the Senate. Not only that, the representation for minority, by virtue of his conduct, has been cut down significantly as the leadership has left them because their representative is somewhat a “misfit” for the kind of leadership team Senator David Mark, the President of the Senate, intends to work with. We gathered that Sen Mark has threatened to report Sen Akume to his party if he does not change his ways.
