The Nigerian Communications Commission on Friday arrested top officials of First Bank Plc, Akure, the Ondo State capital, for the use of unlicensed internet facility by the bank.
The commission also shut down the internet link of the main branch of the bank, resulting in long queues in the banking hall and at the Automated Teller Machines.
The Head of the NCC’s enforcement agent, Mr. Efosa Idehen , said, “If the bank wants to use the link, it should approach the NCC for a licence instead of tapping into it without clearance from the Federal Government. This has denied the government necessary revenue from the sales of the band.”
He however asked the bank’s management to seek clarification from their internet provider before using any band.
Idehen said, “We found out that this bank was transmitting on that frequency band. As at now, they have shut down the link. We have asked them to remove the outdoor and the indoor unit and bring them to the police station. We are going to the police station now to continue the exercise so that we can document it.
“They are there because of the licensable frequency; we don’t want them to be there at all. It belongs to the Federal Government. You have to have a licence to transmit on that band, they don’t have a licence or probably the person they are buying from does not have a licence for that band.”
Idehen said the commission had gone to 23 states where banks or financial institution that violated the Federal Government’s rules were either shut down or have their operations disrupted.
