MEET EMMA EMUWA, THE ARTICULATE BANKER REBUILDING UNION BANK

The name, Emma Emuwa, is not new in the Nigerian banking industry. He is an articulate and vibrant banker per excellence whose outstanding traits remain vividly visible not only to the customers and staff members of Union Bank, but to other banks and bankers across the continent.

Emeka Emuwa is currently the Group Managing Director (GMD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Union Bank of Nigeria PLC (UBN). It is pertinent to note that banking career of Mr. Emuwa had started in 1986, when he joined Citibank Nigeria Limited as a Management Associate. Subsequently, the unique traits in him prompted his emergence as the then first Nigerian Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Citibank. He joined UBN after 25 years with Citigroup.

During his career with Citi, it is on record that Mr. Emuwa held various senior positions within and outside Nigeria including assignments as Country Officer and Country head in Cameroon where he had regional responsibility for the bank’s Central African businesses in Gabon and Congo. Similarly, he was a Country Officer for Citi in Tanzania, Ghana and Niger.

However, it is worth noting that prior to his external and regional roles, he had held several effective and client fronting roles in Nigeria.  He was appointed Country Officer and Managing Director in 2005 and held the position until his departure in 2012.

Mr. Emuwa, a graduate of Finance from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) with an MSc. Degree in Management from Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management, is the Chairman of the Nigeria-Portugal Friendship and Business Association and was until recently a Director of the American Business Council, Accion Microfinance Bank Nigeria and former Chairman of Junior Achievement Nigeria.

In the same vein, it is important to note that prior to the emergence of Mr. Emuwa as the GMD/CEO of Union Bank, the bank was having some challenges, which are inevitable to organisations at a point in time. Mr. Emuwa came in and starts exploring his managerial skills and expertise in banking industry to turn around the bank positively.

As a matter of fact, his positive impacts on Union bank have started manifesting to all, and in the next few months, many more of his achievements and positive impacts on the bank will become so palpable not only to its customers and staff members, but to the world at large. Indeed, with Emma Emuwa as the Union bank GMD/CEO, things can only get betters. Without doubt, Emma Emuwa is a banker that truly knows his onions. Congratulations to Union Bank of Nigeria, its staff members and customers for having Emma Emuwa as the GMD/CEO.
