West Ham manager Sam Allardyce is reportedly on the radar of the Nigerian national team, with the Super-Eagles ready to swoop if he isn’t offered an extension to his Upton Park contract which is due to expire in June.
According to the Sun, it is Jay-Jay Okocha, recently hired as the chairman of the Nigerian Football Association, who is pushing to have his former Bolton boss installed as coach.
West Ham United v Chelsea – Premier League
Okocha spent fours working with Allardyce at Bolton. Together they helped establish the Trotters as a top half Premier League club, so it is unsurprising his one-time manager would be the man he turns to.
Allardyce has also been heavily linked with taking over at Sunderland in the summer following Dick Advocaat’s temporary stay, but he is thought to be under pressure from his wife to take a step back from the rigours of full-time club management.
In that sense an international job could be the perfect opportunity.
Nigeria v Argentina: Group F – 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil
Nigeria have been without a formal head coach since the fiery Stephen Keshi left the post in 2014, with ex-Everton striker Daniel Amokachi filling in until a more permanent appointment is made.
In 2013 the country won the African Cup of Nations for the third time, while they were one of only two African teams that reached the second round of the World Cup in Brazil.
