Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN, Monday, swore in a new Surveyor General for the State who will further the proper dimensioning of the State Land and determination of water tide.
He is Joseph Olorunjuwon Agbenla a 1982 graduate of Surveying from the Institute of Road, Rail and Bridges Bucharest Romania, who succeeds Remi Olatunbosun as the 8th Surveyor General of the State. He is the first Surveyor General to be made Permanent Secretary while in office.
The new Surveyor General/Permanent Secretary will in line with the State’s quest to ensure the proper monitoring of its Land and water bodies, also ensure adequate digital mapping and enterprise GIS while overseeing the supply of special data of socio-political and economic resources of the State.
In his remarks at the ceremony, which held at the Executive Council Chambers, Lagos House, Alausa, Governor Fashola, who noted that the office of Surveyor General was a very sensitive one, pointed out that it was from the office that surveys and land titles were “very defining for the orderly development of our society and for the provision of accommodations”.
Governor Fashola, who extolled the hard work of the immediate past Surveyor General in the completion of the geographic mapping of the State, charged the new Surveyor General to ensure “continuity and stability in all of that process”.
Emphasizing the need for leadership and commitment in the Survey department of the State, Fashola declared, “Accuracy among surveyors means that we would be able to issue titles and other land documents very quickly”.
“Also, people who want Certificates of Occupancy will be able to get them on time while also building and planning permits can be processed more quickly. When all these happen, it translates to increased economic activity, construction development and so on”, the Governor said.
He charged the new Surveyor General to be faithful, diligent and keep to the terms of oath of office to the service without discriminating against anybody and urged him to always place public interest above private interest, saying “It is for us to also give supports because the work of any department here is never isolated work, it requires inter departmental interaction and partnership’’.
Also present at the ceremony were members of the State Executive Council, including Chief of Staff, Mr. Lanre Babalola, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, and wife of the newly sworn in Surveyor General, Mrs. Adeshola Agbenla.
