The governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance in Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has raised the alarm over an alleged assassination attempt on his life by “some men in military uniform.”
This is coming in less than 24 hours after he was accused by the state government of parading “fake military men” on his convoy.
Addressing journalists yesterday at his campaign headquarters in Umuahia, Otti said “last night ( Wednesday ) at 10:58 pm, some men numbering 14 and dressed in military uniform invaded my country home at Nvosi in Isislangwa South council area of the state.”
He said that he was returning from a rally at the time of the alleged invasion.
Otti said the invaders forced their way into his compound and proceeded to his main house when they were accosted by one of the brave mobile policemen guarding his compound and the leader who simply identified himself as “an army captain” said they came to confirm if there were “army men” in his compound.
“After some arguments, ‘the soldiers’ left my compound promising to come back,” he said.
Asked if he had made any formal report of the alleged invasion to the military authorities, he said he had already petitioned the Commandant of the 14 Artillery Brigade Ohafia, the state’s Director of the Department of States Services, and the Commissioner of Police.
He, therefore, called on President Goodluck Jonathan, and the Chief of Army Staff to intervene and save Abia from a possible political crisis.
The former banker accused agents of the state government of vandalizing and mutilating his campaign billboards and posters, an allegation, the Commissioner of Information Chief Anthony Agbazuere dismissed as false.
Otti also accused the ruling Peoples Democratic Party of buying up the Permanent Voter Cards with an intent to rig the forthcoming elections.
But in a reaction, PDP’s Publicity Secretary, Chief Uchechi Ogbuka denied the allegation, saying it is a false alarm and a smoke screen to cover up APGA’s secret agenda.
Otti who restated his preparedness for the poll, however, said he would not be intimidated into abandoning his ambition, adding that any move by anybody to truncate the democratic process or rig the poll will be vigorously resisted.
