No fewer than 14 persons died on Thursday evening in Gombe State when a vehicle crashed into the convoy of the Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo. The procession was returning from the presidential rally of the Peoples Democratic Party in nearby Bauchi State when the tragedy occurred.
According to TheCable, an online news platform, the vehicle which was heading to Abuja for a programme organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, rammed into the convoy around the Alkaleri end of the Bauchi/Gombe federal highway.
“The vehicle of the governor had already passed and it was that of the press that was affected. A bus conveying people to Abuja for the AGRIFEST programme rammed into the convoy. The vehicle was trying to avoid a motorcycle, which was on a high speed when it happened,” said an official of the Department of State Service who asked not to be named.
Gombe State Police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed, while confirming the tragedy, stated that victims had been moved to the Federal Medical Centre, in the capital Gombe.
