Ogun State civil servants and officials of the Ogun State Government on Tuesday engaged in an altercation over the inability of the government to pay the workers their December salaries.
The mild drama occurred at the governor’s office Press Centre, Abeokuta, when the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Adeoluwa Taiwo, who came to represent Governor Ibikunle Amosun, said the December salary had been paid into the individual accounts of the civil servants.
However, the Chairman Public Service Joint Negotiation Council, Mr. Abiodun Olakanmi, who earlier in the day granted an interview on a live programme in a private radio station, had said the December salary had yet to be paid.
Taiwo, who was angry with this development, confronted Olakanmi at the Press Centre, accusing him of ‘mischief and misinforming the public.
The government’s team also included the Commissioner for Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun; and Head of Service, Mrs Modupe Adekunle, among others.
Addressing newsmen, Olakanmi faulted Taiwo’s claim on the payment, saying such claim could not be valid.
He said, “I am just hearing this for the first time, and for anybody to say I am being mischievous, that is not correct.
“I still maintain my position that I stated on the radio interview granted in the morning: I am not aware of any salary payment.”
However, Taiwo and Adeosun said the civil servants would from Tuesday begin to get alerts on salary payment together with the bonus.
Adeosun said, “We have paid Level 1 to 10, we just paid today Level 12 and above. We implore the civil servants to go to the different banks and get their salaries.”
