Former Nigeria international, Ann Chiejine has commended Airtel Nigeria for
initiating the Airtel Rising Stars football championship, which is in its fourth season in the country.
Chiejine who is coordinating the Enugu Zonal finals of ARS 4 told newsmen in Enugu yesterday that the ARS programme has been able to bring out talented youngsters from the remotest parts of Nigeria to limelight, with some of them now in the national U-17 and U-20 football teams.
“If after all the troubles of crisscrossing the entire country, we are not able to discover talents that will feature for the country at the junior and eventually the senior level, then we are not doing anything meaningful,” Chiejine said.
She was happy with the standard of play being exhibited by the budding stars in the zone. “I am really excited that the standard is high. We will be going to Lagos with crack teams that can stand their own against the best from anywhere,”
Chiejine was particularly impressed that the programme gives equal opportunities to both male and female talents. “It is wonderful,” Ann said. “For these children, the sky is the limit.”
The championships will produce two teams (one male and one female) that will compete at the national finals in Lagos on a later date.
The Enugu Zonal programme ends today at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu Campus.
