Wife of the Ekiti State Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, on Tuesday declared that governing the state was not for mediocrity due to the fast pace development required.
She spoke at a dinner where she presented a cheque of N3m to the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ekiti State, for the completion of the press centre.
She described her husband, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, as an “extraordinary leader’’, who had done marvelously well to uplift Ekiti in all facets.
She said “I am not saying this because Dr. Kayode Fayemi is my husband. He is an extraordinary leader and he has done extraordinarily well as the governor of Ekiti State.
“Ekiti has gone beyond being a playing field for mediocre, I mean where people can just be contesting because they want to try their luck.
“This election goes beyond mere voting because our people would have to tell the kind of state they want, whether a state where there will be no more disorder or a place you can’t be proud of,” she said.
Emphasising the need to make the election free, fair and credible, the first lady said, “We are all concerned about this election being peaceful because the whole world is watching Ekiti.
“To achieve this, we will be counting on all stakeholders, particularly the journalists for objective reporting during the election. It is high time we Africans began to do things right so that it won’t seem as if we cannot handle our own affairs.”
She urged the people of the State to vote wisely in the election for the sustainability and consolidation of the ongoing democratic gains .
On why she has excelled in the area of women empowerment in Ekiti, Mrs. Fayemi said “this is what I have done across African nations like Zambia, Swaziland and many others as the Executive Director, African Women Development Fund to cater for people living with HIV/AIDS and vulnerable groups.
“So, I have always believed that you have to go extra miles in whatever you do so that you can be noticed . And it is only when you are noticed that you can be special. So, this has been a career I have a passion for and that I have done all my life,” she said
