Wife of the Executive Governor of Kwara State and Founder LEAH Charity Foundation Mrs. Omolewa Ahmed has been appointed as the Honorary Chancellor Emeritus of the UNESCO club for Global Education at the launching of the club which took place at the Women Development Center Abuja, on Wednesday the 21st of May 2014.
The club which was created to further integrate reading among school children and foster ways of understanding our cultures and their diversities is expected to be adopted by all secondary schools across the country.
Mrs. Ahmed while accepting the honour pointed out that the dwindling trend in reading among our children calls for concern hence the need to further propagate the reading culture. This she said led to the creation of the LEAH reading club initiative which started with the camping of over 200 students carefully selected from public secondary schools across Kwara State. To the glory of God, today the club is presently in 64 public secondary schools across Kwara State.
The coordinator of UNESCO Club for Global Education, Mrs. Grace Obbot in her remarks said the honour bestowed on the wife of Kwara State Governor is based on the laudable initiative of UNESCO for people with integrity and honour to be mentors in education and cultural issues and Mrs. Ahmed has been identified as one with these special attributes.
Earlier at the event, some of the products of the LEAH reading initiative put up an outstanding stage performance as they present a play titled Sango, to commemorate the World’s culture day.
