Delegates of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State, southwest Nigeria, on Saturday, 12th April, 2014, received the beating of their lives as soldiers attached to OP MESA residing inside Ilese barracks invited to the venue of the congress by a faction loyal to the Governor of the state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, descended heavily on delegates loyal to the ex-Governor of the state and a national leader of the party, Aremo Olusegun Osoba.
Various degrees of injuries were sustained by the delegates who were at the venue to vote for candidates of their choice in the ongoing congress of the party.
According to a source, members loyal to the Governor of the state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun invited the military men having seen that the congress will not go in their way if voting was conducted and when the soldiers came they descended on members loyal to the faction led by Chief Segun Osoba.
It was also observed that in some local governments, parallel congresses took place. Example of such was what happened at Ijebu North Local Government Area where faction loyal to Chief Segun Osoba held their congress at the APC party secretariat, Adeboye road, Ijebu Igbo while the Governor’s faction led by the Council Chairman, Chief Laide Osifeso and Hon. Bayo Adesegun held their congress at Ijebu Igbo Town Hall.
But Governor Senator Ibikunle Amosun has described the congress held in the 20 local governments of the state as a huge success, saying it was free and fair.
The Governor who spoke while monitoring the exercise at Obafemi Owode, Abeokuta South, Ado/Odo Otta and Abeokuta North Local Government Areas said what he has seen was a testimony to the fact that free and fair election is possible in Nigeria if the rules are abide with.
