Ekiti 2014: PDP NWC opposes consensus, orders primaries

The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has expressed its opposition to the emergence of its candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election in Ekiti State by consensus, The Eagle Online has learnt.
Rather the party said the 16 aspirants who have indicated interest in the race should get set for the primaries.
It has fixed the primaries for March 22, sources told us on Monday afternoon.
These decisions were taken when the NWC, led by the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, met with the party’s stakeholder from Ekiti State, including the aspirants, on Monday.
The meeting, which took place at the national headquarters of the PDP in Abuja, was chaired by Mu’azu.
Fourteen of the 16 aspirants for the election had opted for the emergence of the candidate by consensus.
However, a former Governor of the state, Ayo Fayose, had stringently insisted on the conduct of primaries.
Owing to this, the NWC summoned the party’s stakeholders in Ekiti State to Abuja.
Sources at the meeting told The Eagle Online that it was agreed that the consensus arrangement runs contrary to the constitution of the PDP.
The party therefore told the aspirants to go and get set for the primaries, which will begin on Wednesday at the ward level with the election of representatives.
The primaries for the emergence of the candidate will then take place on March 22.
