SOKOTO: APC MOVES TO IMPEACH SHAGARI, WOOS KEBBI GOV

The leadership of the All Progressive Congress (APC) is said to have given express order to the governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, to immediately commence impeachment process against the deputy governor, Alhaji Mukhtar Shagari, who has decided to stay put in the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) despite his boss defection to the APC.
Sources told Sunday Tribune that a recent meeting of the leadership of the party had resolved that for Wamakko to be in firm grip of Sokoto State ahead of the 2015 election, he had to replace Shagari.
Sources also said that the decision was borne out of the need to ensure that second term governors in the fold of the APC were able to produce their successors.
The source stated that the party had reviewed the situation in Sokoto and resolved that the way out for Wamakko was to replace Shagari and consolidate his hold on the state.
It was gathered that one of the party leaders recently told a meeting that the governors must learn from the situation of former governors of Kano and Sokoto states, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau and Attahiru Bafarawa, who failed to produce their successors, but had to move from one party to the other.
“If Shekarau and Bafarawa had learnt from the example of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in Lagos and produced their successors, they would have maintained political relevance in the states. But they were shoved aside because the APC needs incumbent governors,” a leader of the APC was quoted as telling a meeting.
“Progressive states governors, especially those in their second terms, have been directed to ensure they strategise for the electoral success of their successors.
“The case of Sokoto is, however, different. The leadership of the party has ordered Wamakko to work towards the eventual impeachment of his deputy to pave way for Wamakko to have easy ride in selecting who becomes his successor.”
It was also gathered that the leadership of APC are working on the governor of Kebbi State, Saidu Darkingari, in a bid to ensure his defection to the party.
“The party is working hard to ensure that Kebbi governor joins us. The 2015 election is more of a battle than a game and that is how we are preparing for it,” a source said.
Sources also said that the APC has ordered Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa to place his deputy, Honourable Bala Ngilari, on a watch list.
It was gathered that the bid to ensure that the governor takes firm control of the politics of the state and produce his successor informed the decision.
