Another high profile kidnapping has occurred in the oil rich Delta State, the victim this time is the wife of the honourable commissioner representing the Itsekiri Ethnic Nationality in the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Michael Diden, a.k.a Ejele, Agatha. She was abducted last night in Asaba by unknown gunmen.
The wife of the former Council Chairman was said to have been picked up in her office at Allen eye clinic in Nnebisi Road in the heart of the State Capital by six heavily armed gunmen, at about 7pm.
They later abandoned the vehicle few meters from the Asaba International Airport, which is still under construction before transferring her into their waiting Toyota Camry car and ferried to an unknown destination.
Latest reports indicate however the kidnappers have established contact with the victim’s family demanding a staggering sum of N50 million ransom for her release.
When contacted, the husband of victim expressed shock at the development and described it as “a tragedy, a set back and unfortunate,” particularly when the state governor at a stakeholders meeting recently assured Deltans that his administration was determined to check the rising crime wave in the state”.
It is no longer news that Delta state have become a den of kidnappers with the menace skyrocketing since the beginning of this year.
Though ‘peace and security’ sit atop the Governor’s three-point agenda with huge security votes, the government appeared helpless on possible means of arresting the situation.
Less that a month ago, an Uncle to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, Sam was kidnapped by unknown gunmen in Asaba. This was immediately followed by the kidnap of the son of the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Ovuozorie Macaulay, Markson who was picked up in his home town in Owhelogbo, Isoko area of the State.
