Keystone Gives 459M Loan to Director to settle Bad Debts with Union Bank

Keystone bank 2 weeks back gave an unguranteed loan to one of his Director Dr Maude kano in order for him to settle his debts with Union Bank who were on the verge of taking over his Ikoyi house after losing multiple cases in the court,we learnt that IN its bid to recover all the outstanding loans, Union Bank Plc few weeks back asked Justice Hussain Baba of an Abuja High Court to compel a member of the Board of Directors of Keystone Bank, Dr Maude Aminun-Kano, to pay a loan of N459 million he took in 2010 to buy a house in Lagos.

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), had nominated Aminu-Kano as a board member of Keystone Bank. In a counter-claim filed by Union Bank’s counsel, Chimezie Ojiabo, the bank said that Aminu-Kano took a loan facility of N260 million to buy a five bedroom detached house with guest chalet and four room boys quarters, located at No. 3c Bank Road, Ikoyi, Lagos under the presidential implementation committee on Federal Government Landed Property Scheme.

He stated that as at close of work on October 8, 2012, the total indebtedness of Aminu-Kano on account of the loan stood at N459,443,799.29.

However, as the bank began to take steps to sell the property to realise the loan, Aminu-Kano went to court claiming that Union Bank was not entitled to sell the property because the bank’s management was still negotiating with him.

Aminu-Kano also asked the court to order the bank to pay him N5million as general damages for breach of understanding and inconveniences suffered by him.

He further asked the court to compel the bank to return to him the certificate of occupancy in respect of his house in Abuja which he used as collateral for the loan, but our findings show that the Director used his position to take another loan from keystone to repay the Union bank, the transcations is raising a lot of eyebrows as Dr kano is known to be a Mulitiple Debtor owning lots of banks.
