For the Senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District in the Upper Legislative Chamber, Senator Akin Odunsi, Saturday, 24th August, 2013, was supposed to be a memorable day.
It was the day the Senator, an advertising guru, slated for commissioning the newly rehabilitated Ijamido Hall, the main town hall in Ota town where the Senator hails from. Senator Odunsi single handedly financed the rehabilitation of the town hall which has been left dilapidated and abandoned for a long time.
Apart from the commissioning of the town hall, Senator Odunsi was also to be honoured with a chieftaincy title of Maiyegun of Ota by the traditional ruler of the town. The two events were slated to take place at the newly rehabilitated town hall.
The Senator and his guests including the traditional ruler and his chiefs were given a rude awakening when they reached the venue of the commissioning event and met stern looking policemen on guard. The policemen were seen turning back guests and the guests had to relocate to the palace of the Ota monarch.
Investigation by us revealed that there has been no love lost between Senator Odunsi and the state Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun. Sources told our correspondent that the bone of contention has been the decision of the Senator to seek a second term in the Red Chamber while the state Governor was reported to favour another person.
Those who are very much familiar with the politics of the state are pointing accusing fingers at the state Governor for the disruption of the commissioning ceremony.
“He wants to take over the leadership of the party at all cost hence he feels threatened by the performance of other elected politicians who he feels are not loyal to him,” sources told our correspondent.
Senator Odunsi was eventually honoured with the chieftaincy title at the palace of the Ota monarch and our correspondent reported that the event at the Olota palace went without any hitches
