Hon. Mojisola Meranda Becomes First Female Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly

Lagos State has made history as Hon. Mojisola Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, was sworn in as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. This development followed the impeachment of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, on allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The swearing-in ceremony, which took place on Monday, January 13, 2025, at the Assembly complex in Alausa, Lagos, was attended by members of the House, security operatives, and other dignitaries. Meranda’s elevation marks a significant milestone for women in Nigerian politics, as she becomes the first female Speaker in the history of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Her rise to the position of Speaker follows a distinguished political career. Meranda, who was first elected to the House in 2015, previously served as the Chief Whip during the 9th Assembly and Deputy Speaker of the 10th Assembly. Known for her legislative acumen, she has chaired key committees, including Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, and Establishment, Training, Pension, and Public Service.

Meranda’s educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from Lagos State University, a Master’s in Public and International Affairs from the University of Lagos, and ongoing studies for an MBA in Public Sector Management at the University of York, UK.

The impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa came after allegations of financial misconduct, including the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for backup vehicles for lawmakers and other controversial activities. While Obasa has denied all allegations, the decision to remove him signals a commitment to accountability within the Assembly.

Meranda’s appointment has been widely welcomed as a step forward for gender representation in Nigerian politics. Stakeholders have expressed hope that her leadership will bring renewed focus to legislative effectiveness and the needs of Lagos residents.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party in Lagos State, has distanced itself from speculations surrounding the political drama, attributing it to opposition attempts to stir controversy. In a statement, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, said the party remains committed to governance and unity within its ranks.

As the new Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Meranda is expected to lead the Assembly with a focus on fostering collaboration, accountability, and progress for Lagosians. Her leadership marks a new era in Lagos State politics, symbolizing the growing role of women in shaping Nigeria’s democracy.
