The Lagos State Police Command has denied allegations that male and female suspects were held together in a cell at the Maroko Police Station.
This followed an online video showing men and women detained in the same holding area.
The video, shared on social media platform X, was accompanied by claims from a woman who alleged she was detained with other women and men in a single cell. She expressed concern over the situation and appealed for assistance.
However, police spokesperson SP Benjamin Hundeyin refuted the allegations, clarifying that the individuals in the video were in a temporary holding area, not a cell. He stressed that officers stationed in the charge room constantly observe this area.
Hundeyin further explained that suspects are separated by gender upon being transferred to the main cell block and are not permitted to have mobile phones in those areas.
In a video released by the police, a group of individuals could be seen lined up against a wall in what appears to be an open area. An officer explains that these young people were found roaming the streets and brought to the station for their safety. Many had already been reunited with their families
The officer also shows the charge room and states that the individuals in question chose to remain in the passageway leading to the male and female cells.
The incident sparked debate online about detention conditions and police procedures.
The Lagos State Police Command maintained that it upholds proper protocols to ensure the safety and well- being of all individuals in its custody.
