I received with shock and utter grief, the sudden death of Distinguished Senator Ayogu Eze, the quintessential journalist and gentleman politician who represented Enugu North Senatorial District between 2007 to 2015.
Distinguished Senator Eze grew by dint of hard work to become one of the most highly respected journalists to come out from Enugu State. It was the result of his excellence in the Nigerian media industry that he was invited, first during the short-lived administration of Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo as Governor of Enugu State, as Special Adviser, and again at the dawn of democracy in 1999, to serve the administration of Chimaroke Nnamani as Commissioner for Information.
With the professionalism that he brought to bear on his assignments in Enugu, many of us knew he was destined for greater leadership positions, and it did not come as a surprise when he won the election as a senator to represent Enugu District at the upper chamber of the National Assembly in 2007.
He was later appointed a board member of the Nigerian Ports Authority, and later a Commissioner with the Revenue Mobilisation Allocations and Fiscal Commission.
Ayogu, like in all his previous assignments, was a star to watch, bringing his expertise and professional integrity to glamourize the Senate Committee on Information, one of the committees he served as Chairman, and carrying with him the honesty and integrity for which his people are known and respected.
His integrity and contributions to nation building were also critical to his appointments in NPA and RMAFC.
The death of Senator Ayogu Eze is a huge blow to the Enugu North Senatorial Zone and the entire Enugu State in general. Senator Eze has been a beacon of light and a champion for the mobilization of the people toward social and economic emancipation.
We lost Senator Eze at a time when our people needed him the most to mentor and guide future leaders of our people and help organize and harness their energies purposeful political unity.
There is no doubt that his absence will be missed, but it is our prayer that the Almighty God will grant his soul eternal peace while also granting his family the fortitude to bear the loss.
Rest in peace Distinguished Senator and leader.
Signed.
