In the face of untold Economic hardship in the Country, resulting in high prices of staple foods across Nigeria, leaving most of our leaders bereft of ideas in tackling the eminent economic crises, Gov. Umo Eno came up with a well orchestrated and people centric idea of establishing a Bulk Purchase Agency to mitigate the sufferings of the people in Akwa Ibom State.
Recall that the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pst. Umo Bassey Eno, had on 19th February, 2024 forwarded a Bulk Purchase Agency Bill to the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly for consideration. Having learnt of the development, there was wild celebration across the State as our Media team swung into action to have first hand perception of the people concerning the proposed Bulk Purchase Agency.
The feedback from most people interviewed by the Media team was that of commendations for the golden Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pst. Umo Eno, for his very timely intervention and people friendly policies that the golden era administration is known for.
The Bulk Purchase Agency, when fully implemented, will enable Akwa Ibomites to buy items such as Garri, Rice, Beans, Yam, Potatoes, Onions and even lives stock at a subsidized rate. Thereby reducing the sufferings of the people across Akwa Ibom State.
On Thursday, 29th February, 2024, news filtered in that the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed a bill for a law to establish the Akwa Ibom State Bulk Purchase Agency for the purchase and distribution of staple food at a subsidized rate across Akwa Ibom State, having gone through the first, second and third reading in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. Next is for the Governor to sign the Bill into law.
Note that the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pst. Umo Eno is very intentional about the establishment of the Bulk Purchase Agency due to his passion for the people. He will never be seen doing nothing to improve the economic well-being of the people. It is the same compassionate nature of the Governor that made him took the bold step of sending the Bill for the establishment of the Bulk Purchase Agency to the State’s House of Assembly.
I have personally taken a step to search for any precedent as regards the innovative and creative idea of establishment of Bulk Purchase Agency anywhere in Nigeria, believe me, I found nothing. That is to say that Akwa Ibom State Government will be the first to establish a Bulk Purchase Agency in Nigeria. Quote me anywhere. In one of my campaign articles, I told my readers that Pst. Umo Eno is a trailblazer, pacesetter and a pathfinder. Today, I am vindicated by the performance of Pst. Umo Eno since his assumption of office as the Governor of Akwa Ibom State on 29th May, 2023. Akwa Ibom State is indeed very lucky to have Pst. Umo Eno as the State Governor.
The Bulk Purchase Agency when fully implemented will operate under the supervion of the Governor’s Economic Adviser. Departments such as Operations, Finance/Administration, Monitoring, Evaluation and Compliance shall be functional to see to the success of the Agency. Part of the team includes, the Commissioner for Economic Development, Commissioner for Justice, Commissioner for Agriculture and that of Internal Security.
During one of my recent radio interview at Premium 89.9fm, I was asked by my host why the Commissioner for Internal Security should be a part of the team. I answered by saying that one of the reasons for scarcity of agricultural products and staple food is traceable to hoarding, leading to artificial scarcity. With the involvement of the Commissioner for Internal Security and Waterways in the team, I believe he will unleash the operatives under Ibom Community Watch to monitor the supply chain during the process of distribution of the selected items from the source to the end users to guard against theft, pilfering and hoarding of the commodities meant to ameliorate the sufferings of the people.
Thank you very much our performing Governor for this very lofty initiatives. At this juncture, I encourage all Akwa Ibomites to be patience and steadfast as the Governor of Akwa Ibom State has taken a bold step to cushioning the effects of the untold hardship in the land.
