Nigeria’s Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has regained his freedom after spending two years in Benin Republic.
Sunday Igboho, who wanted to use Benin Republic to flee from Nigeria, was arrested and kept in prison for some months.
At some point, he was also tried by the Benin Republic Government.
However on Sunday in a statement backed by a video recording, Igboho said he was now a free man.
But he would not be returning to Nigeria, a Yoruba leader in Benin Republic with him,
Prof. Banji Akintoye, has said.
Rather, Akintoye revealed, Igboho will be flying to Germany to reunite with his family.
The Eagle Online recalls that Igboho was arrested on July 19, 2021 by the International Criminal Police Organisation at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Republic of Benin on his way to Germany.
This was after he fled Nigeria following a raid on his residence in Soka area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, by operatives of the Department of State Services.
The raid led to the death of no fewer than two persons.
In the statement he released on Sunday, Igboho said: “First of all, my sincere appreciation goes to God almighty, the master of the universe for making this day. I want to say a big thank you to all Yoruba sons and daughters all over the world for their love and support before and after the loss of my dear mother, though she’s still kept at the morgue, waiting for me to come and give her the befitting burial that she deserves.
“I give special thanks to President Talon of Benin Republic and to all members of his cabinet. My gratitude goes to my heroic father, Prof. Banji Akintoye, and Prof. Wole Soyinka for their support in the course of the struggle. May God reward you Baba for your standing courageously for our Yoruba nation and me. You promised to stand by me through my ordeal in Benin Republic and you have fulfilled your promise.”

A 38-year-old teacher, Oladejo Musbahu, on Tuesday prayed a Shari’a Court II sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, to order his ex-wife, Fatima Adebanjo, to allow him access to his three children.
The complainant also prayed the court to confirm a pronouncement of divorce he issued the defendant.
He said he was no longer interested in Adebanjo because she wasn’t submissive, adding that her parents had also abused and assaulted him.
On her part, the defendant denied the allegations, adding that the complainant had issued her three pronouncements of divorce which were irrevocable.
She agreed to allow him to see his children outside the premises of her parents’ house.
The judge, Malam Nuhu Falalu, advised the couple to consider their children and settle their differences.
He adjourned the matter till Sept. 21, for the defendant to present witnesses on her counterclaim of being issued three divorce pronouncements.
