Foremost Lagos traditional ruler, Oba Saheed Elegushi was yesterday conferred with an honorary doctorate degree by the Lagos State University, at the grand finale of its 26th convocation ceremony and 40th anniversary of the establishment of the university.
The epoch making event attended by the visitor to the university and governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-olu and other eminent Nigerians, had Oba Elegushi bagging an honorary Doctor of Arts in broadcasting, community integration and human rights advocate.
Speaking after being conferred, Oba Elegushi said the honour from Lagos State University is one he will cherish all his life, as it was coming from the same school he completed his first and second degree.
“To be recognized in this way is truly a privilege, and I am grateful for the recognition from my alma mater, 23years after I completed my first degree from here”.
Continuing, Oba Elegushi said the honour is not only recognition of his modest contribution to society and nation building but an encouragement to continue to tow the part of excellence and put his resources for the benefit of humanity.
Other notable Nigerians honoured at the convocation include Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, immediate past governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, Oniba of Iba kingdom, Oba Adeshina Sulaimon Raji and the Senior Pastor of the Mountain of Fire Ministries, Dr Kayode Olukoya.
Highlight of the event was the turning of the sod for the Centre for Lagos Studies, a research and multi-purpose centre donated to the University by Oba Saheed Elegushi.
The foundation laying ceremony was conducted by the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, assisted by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, Lagos State Head of Service, Hakeem Muri-Okunola and other members of the governing council of the university
