*OPEN LETTER TO OSHOKO – 20-06-2022*
Your Excellency Sir,
The Gubernatorial election in Ekiti State has come and gone. I experienced what transpired in the election first-hand and I reflected on the events leading to the election, these have prompted me to attempt to put my thoughts across to you. I hope you get to read this or perhaps, one way or the other someone mentions one or two points therein to you.
Oga Ayo, Peter the Rock, my dear Uncle, you are one of the most popular and loved politicians in Nigeria. You have well over 900k Twitter followers and you get consistent and mostly positive engagements on the platform. If anyone thinks your social media popularity is just that, then such person should wait till he/she sees you get followed on the streets by a multitude of ordinary men. But Sir, let me be honest with you, it ends there. These days such no longer translate to votes. Times have changed. Voters these days will support you, campaign for you, canvass for you, sing your praises and have you in their minds till the most crucial moment when they have the ballot paper and the ink pad, then the reality of what ₦10k can buy will dawn on them and they will forget you for that moment and allow their thumbs disobey their minds and conscience.
Oshokomole, it is high time you understood when enough is indeed enough. You should not just be more democratic; you should be seen to be really democratic if you want to have a come back anytime soon.
Your Excellency sir, by now, you should have realized that your “ko si pin pin l’Ekiti” will only spell doom for your political party and career. You obviously can’t do it alone. Yes, you can get across to the voters yourself without the help of any other strong man but on the day of election when it matters most you won’t be able to get to the voters in their various wards and polling units, in fact, you won’t be able to leave Afao-Ekiti.
I think you should listen more and also create special rooms for intelligent people in your political mansion; don’t confine eggheads to the gatehouse while riff raffs and your yes men ditch out orders to them from the penthouse, such system isn’t sustainable.
I sure know you are a political colossus, not just in Ekiti but in the whole of the country. You are a giant in status and stature. You aren’t dead and buried politically, you only suffered a setback, perhaps, an avoidable one. You are still very much a powerful force to reckon with.
Your Excellency sir, I hope you aren’t entertaining any thought of revenging the actions and/or inactions of your perceived detractors within and outside of your political party because it would appear your party left you and your candidate for the cold in the elections. If you ask me sir, it will be foolish to entertain such thought, it will only deepen your sore and make healing long and painful. Consider it one of those things, let go and let God, afterall, you aren’t new to battles and disappointments. Fix your gaze on the trophy and plan your comeback.
However Sir, don’t rush to stage a comeback or to test your popularity, sit down and reflect. Review your political steps of the past few months, make amends and build on the positives. Thankfully, another election is in 8 months and your son is directly involved. 8 months is ordinarily a long time in politics but in Ekiti political calendar it is a very short one because the new government in the State would just be about 4 months on the saddle and will definitely be enjoying honeymoon with Ekiti people, as such, your party having a good outing in the elections will be difficult, yes, difficult but definitely not impossible if you take the right steps.
I wish you good luck Sir.
Ìyàndá Òkín,
Atiba Market Square, Odogede Quarters,
