Makinde Signs Amotekun Bill Into Law, Warns Criminally-Minded

Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has signed into law the bill backing the establishment of the Oyo State Security Network Agency codenamed Amotekun Corps.

This came barely two weeks after the House of Assembly passed the bill.

At the signing ceremony held at the Executive Council Chambers of the Governor’s Office, Governor Makinde said: “What we are saying is, we need to have a secure environment. We want to give assurance to our investors. I was in Florida last week. The responses have been great and this is one of the things I promised them at that event. I told them to come because we know investors are cowards. If money sees a place that is not safe, it runs away. So, we are providing a safe and secure in Oyo State. Investors should please come and we guarantee decent returns on their investments.

“It is also a time to tell the criminally-minded ones to stay away from Oyo State. They should stay away from the South-West geopolitical zone of Nigeria because if they dont, Amotekun will get them.”

Recall that the governor has played a pivotal role in the establishment of the regional security outfit due to the central location and importance of Oyo State to the Southwest.

However, the security summit, which gave birth to the idea of Amotekun, was held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. The outfit was jointly launched on the premises of Makinde’s office on January 9 before the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN), declared the regional security outfit illegal.

Operation Amotekun was originally conceived as a regional security outfit by the governors of Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo and Lagos states.
