Stop blaming Lagos! Blame your so-called Federation whose serial failure has left it’s only viable city bursting at the seams. Even with the movement of the federal capital away almost 30 years ago, Lagos remains the only city that attracts everyone from every corner. Why? For the simple reason that other States are not working. They are all hopeless shambles. Hopeless leaders and indolent followers.
New York attracts more immigration than any city in the US. It’s the first port of landing for many immigrants every year. Yet, it’s population of around 8m has remained roughly the same since the 1950s. Why? Folks come in, stabilize and then move on. They can move on because other States are working and can absorb them with even better living conditions. So NYC’s facilities are never over stretched and it can plan adequately for its needs. Lagos? Who is even sure what the population is today? As the country continues to collapse from economic and security challenges, everyone has headed for Lagos, making the whole city hardly better than a giant Refugee Camp.
Abuja, the Federal Capital that should shoulder the burden is virtually free of Bikes (Okada) transport. By legislation. Yet it offers no succor to the only State/City that continues to cover for its failures. The other States? They are all too happy to free up their citizens for the perceived eldorado that is Lagos. Yet we all mouth off at the problems of the city, with no perspective on why it is where it is today.
Feel for Lagos. Feel for its people. Have a go at the city’s leadership. But, ultimately, recognize that Lagos is suffering from the failure of our nation. Not the other way round.
