Sometime last year, the Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari, struck a deal with bandits, who were terrorising the state, posed in a photo session that later went viral with their leaders and Malami didn’t see anything wrong in a state surrendering to criminals or that it was a palpable sign of helplessness.
Although speaking to armed fighters is allowed even in more civilised climes, approach is always different, more so not with common thieves. Bandits are nothing but thieves. Nothing ideological in their struggle.
But in spite of the deal, the latest report from Katsina, incidentally the president’s home state, is that the bandits had returned to their beats and even more daring.
Sadly, in spite of the deal, which allegedly involved many miliions that could have been deployed to something more productive or even legitimately tackled the criminals, there isn’t value for money and the efforts so far put in.
Yet, in another part of the country, where governors, rather than sit with criminals to negotiate the safety of their people, came up with a plan, supposedly potent enough to stem the tide of attacks, you then came out to openly dismiss it as illegal?
Weh don sah…Attorney General of the universe!
Let’s even admit that the governors hadn’t gone about it the way he wanted or that suited his legal perspective, what’s wrong in engaging them to finding a middle ground in collective interest?
After all, we are talking about an idea that was allegedly discussed at the highest level in the presidency and of which the police leadership was carried along from day one. So, what’s the hullabaloo about?
By now, I guess Malami is enjoying the current politicisation of an otherwise novel idea? If this is their idea of working together in collective interest, it is understandable why they have remained clueless on how to move the country forward through sound ideas, devoid of primordial sentiments.
And for the “defenders” of the universe, who would rather we all slept in the same direction, opinions are free. I just aired mine.
What a country!
