The Governor of Ekiti State and Chairman Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Dr John Kayode Fayemi has advocated for a new philosophy for media practice in Africa.
Dr Fayemi gave the charge while delivering a lecture titled “Excellence In Gorvernance: Exploring A Synergy Between Think- Tank and Mass Communicators” at The 1st Governors’ Lecture organised by Nigerian Communication Scholars and Practitioners in Lagos on Friday.
The Governor who noted that African communication intellectuals and professionals need to aggregate a separate philosophical tradition for African media practice believes that the media is dangerously elite predatory ,urban focused and generally negative therefore professionals must re-engage the concept of agenda-setting.
Dr Fayemi who is also an alumnus of the University of Lagos, advised the media to eschew adversarial tradition and become less antagonistic while also charging them to remain highly critical in their engagement of government to ensure probity, accountability and transparency.
