PwC launches 2019 edition of Media Excellence Awards Issues call for entries

Lagos, 7 August 2019: Entries are now open for the fourth edition of PwC’s Media Excellence Awards. The awards, which celebrate excellence in business reporting in Nigeria, is open to journalists who have produced a story that falls within the categories covered by the award and that is available on a platform whose primary audience is Nigeria. Submissions will close on Tuesday 3 September 2019 with the Award gala night slated to hold on Friday 4 October 2019.

“The media is critical to building trust in society and in advancing the economy and this informs our sustained effort over the years to empower journalists across all channels to improve the quality of their work. For six years now, we have annually hosted and provided free training to journalists through our annual capability enhancement workshops while also rewarding excellence through the annual awards which is now in its fourth year.

We are very proud to launch this 2019 edition. As has been the trend, this edition will be even bigger and better packaged as we aim to continue creating sustainable impact and making a clear difference through this important initiative. We look forward to receiving the entries and celebrating the impressive work being done by journalists in Nigeria.”

The statement from the firm further indicates that entries will be received in four categories including tax, capital markets, SMEs and business/economy reporting and all submissions will be done online through the firm’s website at www.pwc.com/ng/media-awards. Entries will be judged by a panel of professionals with extensive knowledge and experience in the subject matter covered. Winners in each category will receive a cash prize of N500, 000.00 (Five Hundred Thousand Naira) with top entries recognised and rewarded. Interested participants should follow the firm’s social media pages for directions on how to enter.

In the 2018 edition of the award which had entries from print, online and broadcast media, Stanley Opara of The Punch Newspapers emerged winner of the Capital Markets reporting category for his entry “Green bonds as a lifeline for Nigeria’s degraded environment.” Isaac Anyaogu’s report in BusinessDay titled “A harvest of sunshine” picked the SME reporting prize. Kemi Busari was the winner of the Business & Economy category for an investigative report published in the Premium Times titled “Corruption, extortion reign at Nigeria Immigration passport office”. The Tax reporting category was won by Chima Nwokoji of the Nigerian Tribune newspaper for the entry “Tax ‘Armageddon’ beckons as VAIDS period ends”.
