How Governor Ambode Ruined His Second Term Ambition as Governor of Lagos – TAYO AYINDE
Director-General of Babajide Sanwo-Olu Campaign Organization, BOSCO 219, Tayo Ayinde has explained some of the slips made by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, outgoing governor of Lagos in his administration that is winding up in few days, in an exclusive interview with NaijaHottestGist.com.
The former Chief Security Detail to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu while he was Governor of Lagos State posited that Governor Ambode failed on account of his grey experience in politics and human management skills before he became governor.
Ayinde explained that experience as a political appointee, counts more than experience as a civil servant, in taking the task of being a governor in a state like Lagos.
He reckoned that although, Ambode had a meritorious 27 years of civil service experience until his retirement in 2012, as Permanent Secretary/Accountant General of the state; his experience could not be compared to Babajide Sanwo-Olu who held political appointments at different levels in the past 17 years under the Lagos State government, having served as Special Adviser on Corporate Matters to then Deputy Governor, Femi Pedro, acting Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget until 2007. Then became Commisioner for Commerce and Industry under Ashiwaju Bola Tinubu, and was later appointed Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions by Governor Babatunde Fashola. And the last office he held was as MD/CEO of Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) under Ambode’s administration in 2016.
Ayinde remarked that Sanwo-Olu’s experience serving in these capacities coupled with his life in the private sector makes him better positioned to lead Lagos State.
Ayinde, speaking on Ambode’s style of leadership, posited that he alienated himself from the people, and was not popular among civil servants, who perceived him as being unapproachable.
“How do you advise someone who made himself unapproachable? Ambode alienated his government from the people. He refused to match governance with politics. Any Governor that does that already got it wrong from the inception of his government. Even among the civil servants he wasn’t popular; right now, civil service in Lagos State is only auto piloting itself, Ambode disorganized the system. He was not listening to anyone; not civil servants, not politicians. A Permanent Secretary could not show up in his office to air an opinion, they approach him with fear; because he could as much as send you out of service, if he finds out you hold contrary opinion from his. Those were factors that militated against his return to office.”
