As more and more reactions continue to trail the mishap of an Ethiopian Airlines flight which killed all 157 passengers on board and its crew, the sadness of that crash is personalized in the death of one of Nigeria’s most brilliant export to the world, Prof. Pius Adesanmi.
The news of Prof. Pius’s death hit like a tornado and has rightly generated a storm of sorrowful outpouring of tributes, prayers and expressions of deep loss. He was, until his death, a scholar extraordinaire with an adept insight into Nigeria’s perennial challenges as a fledging democracy.
Prof. Pius’s seasoned commentaries informed and kept many erring political and economic leaders in Nigeria and beyond on their toes. His contributions to nation building by words and actions sets a fiery example of practicable activism and raises the bar in service to one’s nation.
It is very difficult, if not impossible, to ever come to terms with such a loss especially on a matter as routine as a flight. Some men are simply made of so rare a virtue that the world finds them irreplaceable. For his many roles as a teacher, instructor, social commentator and activist, Prof. Pius Adesanmi was in a class of his own, first amongst equals and unmatched in his uncanny prowess for seeing angles, and reaching insightful conclusions previously unknown.
As the nation continues to mourn, and indeed the world affected by his brilliance, I do convey my heartfelt condolences to his family. At this moment of deep sorrow may God’s succor placate their immense loss. Nigeria itself is deprived of his shining example and will sorely miss his timely inputs.
One takes solace in the content of his premonitory last post on Facebook just before ascending the skies never to return to us. In it he reaffirmed his faith and place with God by which we cling desperately to the hope that he is, even this very moment, situate in rest eternal in God’s presence.
We commit his soul and that of all unfortunate occupants of the plane to God’s bosom.
