Jimi Agbaje, the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP governorship candidate in Lagos State, has hailed the recall of Edgal Imohimi, Lagos State Police Commissioner, who was a few days ago, redeployed under very baffling circumstances. But less than 24 hours after taking office, Nigeria’s new Inspector General of Police, Abubakar Adamu Mohammed, has reversed the controversial redeployment.
This recall, according to the PDP candidate “has no doubt, doused tension and significantly addressed the palpable fear in the state. Many people in Lagos State had openly criticized the sudden redeployment of Imohimi on the eve of a crucial election.
I therefore commend the new Inspector General of Police, Abubakar Adamu Mohammed, for this singular act. I consider his action patriotic, especially in this season of election when every decision or pronouncement is screened and evaluated by stakeholders.
“The reinstatement has also restored public confidence. I can actually feel the relief and happiness, even on the streets of Lagos. There had been skepticism, especially among those in the opposition because of the officer who was earlier announced as replacement for Imohimi.
“Some less charitable critics of the aborted redeployment had even insinuated that the failed change was actually an attempt to assist a certain individual and his political party in the coming elections. Yes, it was viewed as a political appointment in many quarters. We thank God that all the rumours and speculations have now been laid to rest with Imohimi’s recall. We can now focus on our campaign without losing sleep, especially
“But I wish to again, reiterate my call for a level-playing ground. Our institution must not create the impression that certain persons are above the law because this will be counter-productive. There is a lot at stake in this election and I call on all the law enforcement agencies and other participants in the process to be fair and professional.
“History will be unkind to anybody or group that uses their position to circumvent the wishes of the people. I am happy that those who had doubts about the impartiality of the police because of the earlier controversial appointment can now be rest assured.
“Again, we thank the IGP and urge him to be fair and to also keep an eye on Lagos State. This is the only way to dispel the growing fear and rumour-mongering”.
